Melissa Asklof of Ames has been hired as an AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteer in Service to America) to work on Grade-Level Reading for United Way of Story County (UWSC). Asklof began at UWSC on August 1.
As AmeriCorps VISTA, Asklof will work on summer learning, school readiness and attendance awareness initiatives. She will be working with Ames Reads to expand the grade level reading effort.
Asklof is a recent graduate from Central College with a Bachelor of Arts in Music. She has volunteered for a variety of activities from organizing the Fall Choir Mini-Tour, to providing childcare at the Young Women’s Resource Center to interacting with residents at an assisted living facility. She has a passion for helping people and sees music as a way to provide comfort to all.
“We’re thrilled to have Melissa join the United Way of Story County team and help us in our work around grade level reading,” said Jean Kresse, president and CEO of UWSC.
UWSC is a strategic leader in building countywide partnerships to identify needs and to develop, support and evaluate effective human services, especially in the areas of education, income and health for our diverse community.
