When we look at the issues facing our community, it is easy to view progress through the lens of funding, metrics, and long-term strategic plans. While those elements are essential, there is another driver of change that is just as vital: our shared commitment to showing up for one another.
At United Way of Story County, our mission is to unite people, ideas, and resources to transform lives. That philosophy is what drives our annual Day of Caring, which has long been the pinnacle of volunteerism in our community. Over the years, thousands of volunteers have given their time and energy to lift up our local nonprofits.
As we look toward the future, leadership requires us to continually ask: How can we do better? How can we lower barriers to participation and create a bigger table for everyone?
That is why I am so proud to share the major enhancements we’re introducing for Day of Caring 2026.
Expanding Access, Deepening Connection
In the past, we recognized that some supporters could only commit to a partial day, or found certain off-site physical projects less accessible. If we want a truly connected community, our flagship service event must reflect that there is room for everyone.
This year, while our morning will remain dedicated to crucial service projects at nonprofit sites across the county, our afternoon will transition to a centralized, high-energy kit-building initiative at the ISU Alumni Center.
Perhaps the most exciting addition to this year’s event happens from 3:30 to 4:30 PM, when we are officially opening our doors to families. We can’t wait to welcome young volunteers and their parents as we build a culture of service together! By offering kid-friendly service activities, we are creating a space where multi-generational service can thrive. The spirit of community care is most powerful when it begins at a young age, and we want our children to grow up knowing the power of giving back.
Service as the Catalyst for 2030 Impact
This evolution of Day of Caring isn’t just about a single afternoon of volunteering; it is a vital step toward our 2030 Community Impact goals.
Every kit assembled, every conversation sparked, and every business that steps up as a corporate sponsor creates a ripple effect. This collective action directly fuels our long-term strategies across Bright Futures, Financial Empowerment, and Collective Well-Being. When we bring residents from all walks of life together, we aren’t just providing immediate relief—we are strengthening the very social fabric of Story County.
