2030 Community Impact Agenda

United Way of Story County is pleased to share its 2030 Community Impact Agenda, a bold roadmap designed to address critical local needs and improve lives across the county.

Our 2030 Roadmap

Shaped by data and informed by community voices, the 2030 Community Impact Agenda sets clear goals in three priority areas: Bright Futures, Financial Empowerment, and Collective Well-Being. Together, these goals will help close gaps in key areas such as third grade reading proficiency, access to affordable and quality childcare, homelessness prevention and housing navigation, financial education and coaching, access to basic needs, and mental health support.

2030 Community Impact Goals

United Way of Story County creates lasting change through three key impact areas—Bright Futures, Financial Empowerment, and Collective Well-Being—ensuring children succeed, families build stability, and our community thrives together.

Bright Futures
GOAL: Deliver 12,500 high-quality early childhood education opportunities

Every child deserves the chance to learn, grow, and thrive right from the start. When they do, it creates a wave of opportunity that strengthens families and lifts our whole community!

That’s why UWSC is going all-in on expanding early childhood opportunities across the county. Here is how we are creating bright futures:

  • High-Quality, Affordable Child Care: We are partnering with local child care providers to help them achieve higher Iowa Quality for Kids (IQ4K) ratings, ensuring top-notch programming for our kids.
  • Literacy Proficiency: We continue to grow the Iowa Reading Corps, now offered in six elementary and ensuring more students reach their grade-level benchmarks.
  • Summer & Out-of-School Learning: Our investments provide median and low-income families the opportunity to participate in summer and out-of-school learning programs through scholarships and sliding-scale fees.
Financial Empowerment
GOAL: Invest in tools to build long-term financial stability for 1,000 households annually

UWSC is committed to helping families build long-term financial stability through education, tools, and resources that reduce debt and grow savings.

Financial stability helps families move from surviving to thriving, but many lack access to the tools to get there. Here is how we are building financial empowerment across the county:

  • Tax Assistance: We facilitate the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program to help families maximize their refunds and keep more of their hard-earned money.
  • Financial Education: We are launching a new Matched Savings Program through Women United. We partner with local financial institutions to offer financial education classes and one-on-one financial coaching.
  • Affordable, High-Quality Child Care: We’re teaming up with local childcare agencies to add sliding-scale fee spots, putting excellent care within reach for more families.
Collective Well-Being
Goal: Meet basic needs while fostering 15,000 meaningful connections

Strong communities are built when people feel connected and cared for. Our Collective Well-Being work makes sure everyone has safe places, healthy food, and chances to be part of something bigger.

When people feel supported and included, our community becomes safer, healthier, and full of opportunity for all. Here is how we are working to achieve collective well-being:

  • Meet Basic Needs: We actively promote the 211 hotline so everyone knows where to to turn for localized support as well as partner with local agencies to improve food and housing stability.
  • Mental Health: We work collaboratively to meet the unique needs of our community and build a network of support. In 2025, we grew that network by partnering with Creative Counseling Services, expanding critical counseling opportunities right here in Story County.
  • Fostering Connection & Belonging: We are expanding meaningful volunteer opportunities that bring people together and build a stronger, more connected community.

Data & Outcomes

Community issues are connected, and we can’t solve them alone. That’s why we’re committed to tackling these challenges with our partner agencies, local experts, businesses, and volunteers.

Why It Matters

Behind every statistic is a neighbor, a family, a story. These challenges are just a few that many in our community face.
